Trained as a general practitioner in England, Gina is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, which she joined in 2000 and she works as a family physician with a family practice at the McMaster Family Practice (MFP) and trains residents.

Her research experience started in the UK where she was a fellow with the Imperial College School of Medicine and developed and worked on the National Survey of Diabetes Care for the British Diabetes Association.

She has been the recipient of many research grants, held research fellowships with the CIHR and CDA and has completed a PhD in Epidemiology at McMaster University, for which she was awarded the FHS Graduate Program Outstanding Thesis Award.

Her main research program, for which she holds two major grants, one from Hamilton Health Sciences, and another from the Canadian Institute of Health Research, is based around the provision of novel health risk-assessment programs for seniors in vulnerable areas/seniors buildings. The Program is called CHAP-EMS (Cardiovascular Health Awareness Program – with EMS). This builds on her work within the CHAP Program in Grimsby (the CHAD Program) and also links to her involvement with other CHAP-like research programs in the South Asian Community (C-CHAmP). She is also a PI for the TAPESTRY CARDIOMETABOLIC program which is investigating keeping patients aged 55 years and older with Hypertension and diabetes and one other chronic condition healthy at home.

She describes herself as a Primary Care Epidemiologist. She is the Quality Assurance/Chart Audit Curriculum Coordinator, Residency Research Coordinator and Research in Residency Committee Chair for the Residency Program as well as a tutor for QA at MFP. She regularly supervises undergraduate, masters and doctoral students for portions of their courses, especially independent study and theses.

Students under her supervision have been successful in obtaining research grants (through Regional Medical Associates, Mountain Equipment Corporation and Ontario Public Interest Group), winning the McMaster University Health Sciences Quality Assurance annual awards, and winning the annual Ontario College of Family Physicians Resident Research Prize.
