Global Health Program

Many members of the Department of Family Medicine are involved in health related projects and initiatives abroad.

A Global Health Interest Group meets bi-monthly (over dinner and wine) to share information and to discuss research, education initiatives, and opportunities for collaboration. For more information contact one of the program co-chairs.

The Department also periodically hosts visitors from abroad in connection with our activities.

• Care to Care: Update - Nov 2005 (.doc)
  Additional funding for the Care to Care project by Canadian Friends Service Committee has been secured to allow at least 4 more trips to Kurdistan.
• Care to Care: Continuing Medical Education in Rural Kurdistan, Iraq (.doc)
  Dr. Karl Stobbe has made several visits to Iraq and describes how, in the wake of 10 years of sanctions, approaches to life-long learning have begun to take hold in the medical community.
• Developing Family Medicine in Baltic Europe (.doc)
  Dr. Ieva Neimanis has been working for several years to develop partnerships with family medicine physicians and organizations in the Baltic states, to teach evidence based medicine, faculty development and HIV care.
• A Lasting Tribute to Chesley Missionary Doctor (.doc)
  An article in the lay press describes the work of Dr. George Burgess who has been delivering medical supplies to health care providers in Angola.
• Cervical Cancer Screening in Developing Countries (.doc)
  Dr. John Sellors has been working with PATH to improve cervical cancer screening in developing countries.
• Medical Education Designed For Community Needs: Innovation From Philippines (.doc)
  Dr. Dale Guenter describes how physicians in the Philippines have developed innovative approaches to medical education that address health needs for isolated and underserviced rural communities.
