Grimsby (Rural Stream)

The academic hub for Grimsby is the Niagara Regional Campus in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Grimsby is located between the magnificent Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario.

The Grimsby rural site is situated in the midst of Niagara’s wine country on the shores of Lake Ontario.  The West Lincoln Memorial Hospital is the ‘home hospital’ for this community.  Obstetrics is done longitudinally with Family Medicine with call shifts taking place locally in Grimsby and in the larger centre of St. Catharines.  Other specialty rotations are done either in Hamilton (30-40 minutes away) or St. Catharines (20 minutes away).  There are several diverse family practices in Grimsby as well as the surrounding communities of Smithville and Beamsville.  All local physicians see their own inpatients, do prenatal care, do house calls and care for palliative patients at home or in hospice.  Preceptors in teaching clinics also work in the ER, provide obstetrical services or are GP anesthetics. The academic hub for this site is the Niagara site.

Resident Perspective

The Grimsby rural site is situated in the midst of Niagara’s wine country on the shores of Lake Ontario between Hamilton and St. Catharines. West Lincoln Memorial Hospital is the “home hospital” for the community.  It has 60 beds including 4 bed ICU, approximately 22,000 visits per year in the emergency room and delivers 800+ babies in an obstetrical environment that supports midwives and family doctors.

Obstetrics is done longitudinally over 6 months of family medicine, with weekly call shifts taking place locally in Grimsby, and higher delivery volumes in St. Catharines (20 minutes away). Other specialty rotations are done in St. Catharines including inpatient paediatrics, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. Paediatric emergency is done at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

There are several family practices in Grimsby and the nearby town of Smithville. All local physicians have full comprehensive family practice; provide prenatal care, complete house calls, and palliative care at home and hospice. The West Lincoln Memorial Hospital is largely community run with family physicians covering the ER, providing obstetrical services and GP anesthesia will collegial support from 4 internists, 3 OBGYN and 1 general surgeon.

If you want to finish your training in a learner-centered environment that provides many opportunities to become competent as a full spectrum practice family physician in a rural community while living close to urban centers, then Grimsby is the place to be!
