Chair's Welcome

David PriceWelcome to the Department of Family Medicine website!  As you browse through our site, you will find detailed information on our Residency Program as well as many other initiatives taking place within our department, including highlights from Research, Education and our innovative programs.

The Department of Family Medicine is an academic department which offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs in Family Medicine.  We are an exciting, rapidly expanding department with over 300 residents and undergraduate learners taught, each year, by our more than 900 faculty members who are committed to providing the best possible training and learning opportunities for our learners.

Our department has many exciting things to offer our residents and learners.  We have vibrant Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs, an innovative Research division [which has participated in approximately $22 million dollars in research funding ($2.5 million as Principal Investigator) and has published more than 150 research papers over the past three years] ,  a state-of-the-art IT division, and active and thriving Divisions of Emergency Medicine, Palliative Care and Midwifery.  All of this is supported by our wonderful staff and faculty. Our staff and faculty members are second-to-none and help us to offer a unique Family Medicine learning experience.

We have many teaching sites across Ontario; each designed to fulfill the specific learning needs of our learners.   All of these sites are committed to offering a McMaster Family Medicine experience: whether you are looking for a rural or urban experience, wish to be in a community practice or academic teaching unit, you will be impressed by the quality of educational experiences offered.  We are fortunate and privileged to train future family physicians while, at the same time, providing exemplary care to our diverse patient population. Providing a comprehensive learning experience that is second-to-none is our top priority.  Whether trained in a small rural community or a larger urban environment, all of our residents receive the same McMaster learning experience.  We offer a wide variety of practice locations as well as different health care delivery models.

Our Residency Program has expanded to allow for residents to experience a full range of training experiences within the same geographic area in addition to opportunities outside these sites.  We are proud of our top notch teaching sites in Brampton, Halton, Hamilton (McMaster Family Practice, Stonechurch Family Health Centre, CBRT), Kitchener-Waterloo, Niagara and the Rural Stream.  To learn more about our many sites, please go to our Program Sites.

The Department of Family Medicine is also home to the Maternity Centre of Hamilton.  This Centre offers a comprehensive, collaborative, interdisciplinary experience involving family physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers and a lactation consultant.  To learn more about the Maternity Centre, please click here.

We strongly believe that teams are key to the future of excellent health care in family medicine. Our Academic FHT (comprised of Stonechurch Family Health Centre and McMaster Family Practice) was among the first in Ontario and we are helping to refine the manner in which interprofessional care is delivered in this province through our research, teaching and the sharing of our experiences from the past three decades.  Our learners work along side nurse practitioners, dieticians, social workers, pharmacists, occupational therapists and a lactation consultant.

Our department is actively engaged in transforming the health care system through collaboration at the provincial, national and international levels with world class leaders, thinkers and researchers. We are proud that many of our faculty are engaged in international outreach and have traveled to distant parts of the globe to help the transformation of health care systems elsewhere. We endeavor to provide the best learning opportunities possible to our learners through innovations in technology, innovations in patient care and innovative learning methods.

Our multifaceted program combines patient care, teaching and research, making our department on of the most unique and special programs in the country.

We innovate – We create – We care.

As you read further about our department “family”, we hope you find that our program is the place for you!
