The McMaster Department of Family Medicine is actively engaged with medical student education from the beginning of the undergraduate program.
Through involvement with mentoring, small group facilitation, and clinical learning, our faculty assist medical students to develop skills in patient and family centred care as they begin to develop their professional identity.
Early exposure to family medicine is an important educational philosophy in the McMaster program, and students engage in clinical experiences in family physicians’ offices within a few months of entering medical school during a horizontal placement.
The six-week core family medicine experience during clerkship expands upon this important introduction.
In addition, the Department of Family Medicine provides exciting research opportunities and clinical electives for undergraduate learners.
