PGY3 Enhanced Skills Opportunities

For residents who are interested in pursuing a PGY3 Enhanced Skills program, please note the following information:

  • We accept applications from current PGY2 residents who are currently registered in a Canadian residency program.
  • Please read the program descriptions (available online), and specifically the special instructions for applicants.
  • Residents may apply for funding through the regular (urban stream) or the rural stream (see PGY3 Enhanced Skills Opportunities) or both. Only one application needs to be submitted however residents must indicate which stream(s) they wish to apply for. 
  • Residents interested in pursuing an Enhanced Skills position apply in the fall of their second year. Standardized deadlines for applications have been set across Ontario. 
  • Applications for all programs except Emergency Medicine have an application deadline of Friday, October 31, 2009.
  • Letters of offer to successful candidates will be sent out Friday, December 4, 2009.
  • Confirmation of Acceptance into an Enhanced Skills program from successful candidates needs to be received back by Friday, December 11, 2009.
  • The application should include:
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A letter describing your goals and objectives for the program, how it fits with your future practice needs and in what ways you might be better enabled to contribute to the community, the Department of Family Medicine, or the discipline of family medicine in general.
  • A letter of support from your Program Director which speaks to your academic performance and professionalism.
  • Two additional letters of support are needed from referees who can speak to your professional and interpersonal skills.
  • Any residents interested in applying for a PGY3 in Emergency Medicine should contact Dr. Greg Rutledge (905-521-2100 ext. 73547). Please note that applications for Emergency Medicine should be submitted by September 24, 2009.  Applicants must adhere to the application and documentation process as indicated on the CaRMS website.

Enhanced Skills Application Information (click on Application Information)

A limited number of opportunities for training certification exist. Residents apply in the autumn of their second year to the following available programs:

Urban-based Training

 

  1. Academic Fellowship in Education Research
  2. Anaesthesia
  3. Care of the Elderly*
  4. Emergency Medicine*
  5. H.I.V.
  6. Obstetrics
  7. Palliative Care*
  8. Self-Designed Enhanced Skills Program
  9. Sports Medicine

*fully accredited.

Rural Training


Residents who are interested in doing their training in a rural setting can apply for PGY3 Enhanced Skills funding in Anaesthesia, Palliative Care, Sports Medicine, Obstetrics or a Self-Designed Program. The rural PGY3 Enhanced Skills Program is run jointly with McMaster University, the Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) and Mac-Care. Fifty percent of the training in a rurally funded position must be done outside the tertiary care centre in one of several approved communities in Waterloo-Wellington, Brant, Niagara or Simcoe counties. Programs can be between 6 and 12 months in length, depending on the area of focus chosen. Residents can apply to both the urban and rural streams, but should indicate their preference.
