Behavioural Science
Rather than a two-month rotation in Psychiatry, the important
concepts and skills are acquired through the core Behavioural Science
program. One half-day each week throughout the two years is devoted to
tutorial groups facilitated by a family physician, a psychiatrist and,
where possible, a social worker and a nurse. These tutorials are
oriented to behavioural and psychosocial issues in family practice and
the case material is brought by residents from their clinical
experiences.
During Behavioural Science, residents will:
- Develop skills in the patient-centred clinical method
- Acquire and understand the importance of self-awareness in problem-solving
- Recognize major behavioural and emotional problems in individuals and families
- Recognize the behavioural components of all health issues
- Understand human sexuality; to acquire knowledge of major psychiatric illnesses
- Acquire an appropriate level of knowledge of psychotropic medications
