Care of Children and Adolescents

The PGY1 Pediatric experience in Hamilton is an integrated two-month rotation taking place at  St. Joseph's Healthcare in a secondary level care facility, where residents are exposed to neonatal care, short stay inpatients and emergency room consultation. McMaster University Medical Centre focuses primarily on longer stay inpatient care and emergency consultation. It is our goal that residents based in Hamilton complete a month of both at St. Joseph's and McMaster University.

Two month community Pediatric rotations are also available in Kitchener-Waterloo, Brampton, Guelph, St. Catharines and Barrie.  A one-month rotation is also available in Burlington; this would replace the month at St. Joseph's Neonatal in Hamilton.

During these rotations the resident will have exposure to:

  • Inpatient Pediatrics - common short stay problems as well as more complex care patients
  • Normal Newborn Level 2 Nursery and attendance when required in labour and delivery
  • Out-patient emergency assessment and care

The experience of newborn and infants provides good exposure to common problems of the neonate, and the opportunity to learn neonatal resuscitation.  All residents in our program have the opportunity to become certified in neonatal resuscitation as part of their residency program.

Community based settings are available for PGY2 experiences as elective opportunities both as a horizontal elective or an elective/selective month block within the resident's schedule.

A selective in ambulatory Pediatrics is available in a self-designed PGY3 Enhanced Skills Program.
