Family Medicine
During the two-year core residency, a minimum of ten months is spent in Family Medicine in an ambulatory setting: four months in the first year and six months in the second year; two of which are spent in a designated rural/underserviced community practice selected by the resident from a list of approved sites maintained by the Department. This rural/under-serviced community clinical experience provides an opportunity for residents to experience Family Medicine in a contrasting setting to their regular placement. Residents have the opportunity in their second year to apply to spend two months in their home base family practice site with the remaining four months to be spent in a rural family practice.
During their full-time Family Medicine experience, residents will attend Academic Half Days every Wednesday morning. Videoconferencing is available to those residents who are not located in Hamilton. Each of these academic sessions includes a tutorial in Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM). Each teaching unit, including the community-based unit (CBRT), has their own educational rounds in addition to the central program.
Due to the structure of the rotations in Family Medicine it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that residents have access to a car.
