Niagara Residency

Our Niagara site is the newest addition to our expanding family Medicine Residency Program. Residents who match this site will do their rotations with the family practices in one of five different Niagara communities; St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Grimsby/Beamsville, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Port Colborne. Most of the practices are within 60 minutes of Hamilton and encompass a variety of styles of community practice, from small town to a larger city and incorporating a range of hospital and community resources. There are seven Niagara hospital sites available for education. Each resident’s family practice will be based at one of these across the Niagara region. Some of the rotations, such as Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine may be done in a horizontal fashion, intergraded with the Family medicine experience.

The program emphasizes community, preceptor-based comprehensive training in Family Medicine within the Niagara Peninsula. There are core rotations in the major disciplines of Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Geriatrics.

For the upcoming year, Niagara residents will travel to Hamilton to join their Community Based Residents for their weekly Behavioral Science tutorial on Wednesday afternoons. This academic half-day program can be videoconferenced from 22 Ontario Street in St. Catharines on Wednesday mornings.

Here are some of the special interests of the Niagara faculty:

  • In-Hospital and Emergency Work
  • Obstetrics
  • Palliative Care
  • Sports Medicine
  • Women’s Health
