Health and Safety Information for Department of Family Medicine Employees

The Department of Family Medicine is committed to providing and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment for all employees, students, residents, faculty and visitors. Please take a moment to review the documents below and complete the required health and safety training and paperwork. 1. McMaster University Health and Safety Policy:

Please read this policy carefully and should you have any questions or concerns speak with your supervisor or the Human Resources Assistant.

2. Occupational Health and Safety Act (Section 28):

Please take a moment to review section 28 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it outlines your right to refuse unsafe work. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact your supervisor or the Human Resources Assistant.

3. Job Hazard Analysis Program:

McMaster University requires that all employees complete a Job Hazard Analysis Form to acknowledge that you understand the major, moderate and minor risks your are exposed to in the workplace. By signing the JHA form you have also acknowledged that you understand the safety measures that have been put in place to minimize those risks.

4. Working Alone Policy:

Each location of the Department of Family Medicine has a Working Alone Policy specific to that location. Please speak with your supervisor or the Human Resources Assistant to discuss the policy and sign up should you be interested or need to work alone (outside of regular office hours).

5. Health and Safety Training:

Health and safety training is offered online and in-class by McMaster University. Please find below a list of training that must be completed by all new employees:

  • WHMIS (once every 3 years)
  • Fire Safety (annually)
  • Asbestos Awareness (once)
  • Slips, Trips and Falls (once)
  • Ergonomics (once)

Attached below are the links to the online training sessions for all of the above. Should you wish to attend an in-class session in place of the online training please contact the Human Resources Assistant for more information.


Once you have completed the online training forms please forward them to the Human Resources Assistant by fax at 905-528-5337.

7. Material Safety Data Sheets:

Under the WHMIS Regulations, McMaster is responsible for keeping up to date (within 3 years) copies of Material Safety Data Sheets for all controlled products.  The following links have been provided to help give access to numerous on line locations for material safety data sheets. http://www.workingatmcmaster.ca/eohss/labs/msds/ if you have any questions please contact the Human Resources Assistant.
