Family Medicine Undergraduate Education

Undergraduate Family Medicine is a vibrant part of medical education at McMaster.

McMaster University's Department of Family Medicine has performed strongly in terms of the university rank order list.  Evidence of this is that the Family Medicine Residency Program has doubled over the last 10 years and 42.5% of our graduates chose family medicine in 2008/2009.

The Department of Family Medicine has a strong commitment to involvement in the Undergraduate MD Program.  In Medical Foundations 1 (MF1), all students have a minimum six-week rotation in family medicine. These students spend one half day per week in a community family physician's office, starting in the first month of medical school. There is an option for a 12-week placement as well. This experience is highly rated by the students.

Through the Family Medicine clerkship, students will gain knowledge of common and unique health care problems in primary care, learn how to approach the undifferentiated problem, appreciate the concept of coping with uncertainty, recognize the value of time as a diagnostic and therapeutic modality, and become familiar with opportunistic intervention and preventive care.  These opportunities will arise in the context of long-term relationships with patients and families across a breadth of health care issues.

Six weeks in Family Medicine will provide students with a rich experience and perspective that will position them to be effective health care providers in any and all branches of medicine.  Dynamic. Challenging.  Rewarding.  Welcome to Undergraduate Family Medicine.
