Dr. Lynda Redwood Campbell Receives Prestigious 2018 OMA Presidential Award
Congratulations to Dr. Lynda Redwood-Campbell on receiving the 2018 OMA Presidential Award!
This award is presented to a member of the Association in recognition of exceptional and long-standing humanitarian service to the greater community (in Ontario or elsewhere) that brings honour to the medical profession. The award recipient, by his or her actions, expresses the highest qualities of service by a physician that we all admire.
Over Dr. Redwood-Campbell’s long career, she has been committed to humanitarian action, global health, gender equity and disaster response. While many individuals are interested in global health, Lynda is one of those rare people who lives and breathes it; she teaches it, is scholarly about it from both the research and writing point of view, and actively responds to humanitarian crises all over the world.
In 2005, she was part of the International Red Cross response to the tsunami in Indonesia, and since then she has been to Haiti twice [post-earthquake and post-hurricane], the Philippines and Nepal. Not only does she provide on the ground medical assistance to those in need, she is involved at the societal level, helping to resurrect public health infrastructure and coordinating primary care,.
Her commitment to disaster response (both immediate and post-disaster) , attending training for herself, training others for ishare her experiences both in the popular press and in scholarly articles alone, is what sets her apart. In addition, she shows an ongoing commitment to the Besrour Centre at the College of Family Physicians of Canada, is highly involved in working with students in Ontario (as part of the International Children and Women’s planning group), and has a long term commitment to the Canadian and International Red Cross in terms of policy development and training etc. To top this off, she has been a committed family physician to her patients, and an outstanding preceptor to her family medicine residents and medical students, for the 25 years that she’s been with the Department of Family Medicine here at McMaster University. There couldn’t be a more deserving recipient of this award. Congratulations Lynda! We are so proud of you
