Team of McMaster residents named 2019 Simulation Olympiad champions

November 13, 2019 – The McMaster Family Medicine Simulation team competed in the Simulation Olympiad competition hosted by the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) earlier this month. The 2nd annual event is a friendly competition between Family Medicine programs across Canada.

The Simulation Olympiad puts teams to the test by working through challenging clinical cases in front of many spectators. The teams go through a round robin style competition and judges decide on a winner. Performance is based on medical knowledge and crisis resource management, which is how well the team works together to solve a clinical case. This year, the McMaster team “Macuronium” beat out five other teams to come out on top.

Team Macuronium was made up of six residents, both PGY-1’s and PGY-2’s from McMaster’s Family Medicine residency program. The team held many practice sessions outside of their clinical duties for the previous two months, meeting multiple times for hours to go through different simulation scenarios.

The team was coached by Drs. Kevin Junghwan Dong, Erich Hanel, Jonathan Gravel, and Alim Nagji.

“We are tremendously proud of this team and their dedication to the program,” said Kevin Junghwan Dong, Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department of Family Medicine. “We were very moved by their passion and love for medicine and I am honoured to have worked with these individuals.”

Dong is hoping to continue this endeavour yearly, especially as a joint initiative within the Department of Family Medicine. They are eager to defend the crown at FMF 2020 in Winnipeg.
